PERVERTS BE WARNED: #Darjeeling Girl Files FIR Against a Man Sexually Harassing Her Online, WCD Minister Promises Quick Action.

In the past three years, we have received over 30 complaints from girls/woman requesting us to post about the disgusting messages, and sexual texts they receive from people who befriended them on WhatsApp, Facebook or other online social media platforms.

One of the most disgusting such cases was of a guy we will only identify as Abhi TM. This pervert called a girl he made friends with on Facebook and WhatsApp and when she picked up the call, he was masturbating with his camera pointed to his penis. The victim was in a state of shock and trauma, when she contacted us.

Every time, we get such a request, we urge the victim to file an FIR with the police, but sadly till date everyone we requested to do so, had declined our request, including the victim who was subjected to seeing someone they considered to be their friend, masturbating on camera.

All the victims who contacted us, wanted us to name and shame the person who had sent them dirty texts, pictures, videos, posts and humiliated and bullied them. But sadly we couldn’t.

Unlike many other pages who would willingly post such updates, our philosophy has been that naming and shaming someone just for the heck of doing so, doesn’t help in bringing about a positive change. Change is only possible, when one is willing to fight back against such bullies – legally.

So when we got a complaint of a similar nature three days back, all the way from Israel, we offered the same advice. File an FIR or online complaint.

Initially the victim was reluctant, but then she saw the merit in our request and agreed, that to punish a bully online shaming is not the solution. But allowing law to handle such bullies would not only bring about an end to bullying from the person, but also set an example to other such perverts that if you dare abuse someone online, there will be serious consequences, including arrest and jail.

The victim informed us, how this individual, whom we are identifying only as Ayush IP sent her a random friend request one day. As she is currently working in Israel, anyone trying to get in touch from Darjeeling strikes a chord, and since this guy had some common friends with her, she accepted his request.

Gradually, this guy would chat her up and started to flirt. One day he proposed (in Darjeeling lingo – to get paired up with him) to her online, and she declined his proposal. He started to insist, yet she continued to decline his overtures. Gradually he started to become abusive, and started to send explicit texts and even threatened her. When she blocked him, he started to trouble the victim’s sister after that.

Terrified and shaken to the core, the victim contacted the members of the social workers group Indian Gorkhaz Company, Israel, who informed us.

Many may not be aware, but since October, 2016, the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Govt of India has started as special cell to combat online sexual harassment and bulling of women. So we told the victim and IGC to file an online complaint, with copies to the Hon’ble Minister Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi, Hon’ble Minister Ministry of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and Indian Embassy in Israel.

Within four hours of her filing the complaint, Minister WCD Smt. Maneka Gandhi had instructed the Member Secretary, National Commission for Women to look into the issue. The NCW found merit in her complaint, and has instructed the Cyber Cell, Criminal Investigation Department, Govt of WB to initiate inquires and take “appropriate, urgent, necessary action.”

The CID is now looking into the case, and we are sure, this individual, who chose to harass, humiliate and bully one of our own sisters who is so far away from home, will soon be behind bars.

Those who are reading this report, we request you all to kindly inform everyone about this incident, so that it reaches every girl in our community and country – NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO HARASS AND BULLY YOU – be it in person or online.
