SHOUT OUT to #Kalimpong Topkhana Youths

TheDC team sends a warm “Shout Out” to the youths of Topkhana in Kalimpong who have embarked on the noble “Afno Dhara, Afai Bachau… Arno Gau, Afai Bachao” project.

Instead of waiting for the Kalimpong Municipality to take care of their Dhara, the youths of Ward # 7, decided that it was their responsibility to make sure that the dhara – which provides water to thousands of residents here is taken care of by themselves.

Corresponding with TheDC, Mr. Vikki Thapa says, “instead of pointing fingers at others, and saying what they didn’t do, we decided to take it upon ourselves to protect and conserve our local dhara… we are hopeful that other villages and communities will also do the same… if we are to change the future of our community and hills, we have to make sure our present is strong and exemplary… and that is what we aspire to achieve through this project… everyone needs water, but only a very few care for it, we hope to change that perception…”

Among the youths who have been working hard to make this a reality, we have to acknowledge the contributions of Somtsheering Lepcha, Sham Cheetri, Lakpa Lepcha, Tsheering Lepcha, Mukesh Basor, Suren Cheetri, Prakesh Cheetri, Nirmal Pradhan, Samir Rai and others without whom this inspirational work wouldn’t get completed.

We are hope that other every village will get inspired by this story, and that they will will take it upon themselves to conserve and preserve their own drinking water sources.
